Our Host - Lord Strathnaver welcomes you all
Big events sometimes start from very small beginnings. Such is the case with these competitions which, we hope, will sometime be one of the leading competitions in the piping world. Small beginnings indeed! Indeed no more than a casual remark made by Head Gamekeeper Tommy Shaw while fishing the River Naver in North Sutherland with his guest for the day, Lord Strathnaver.
The idea was born and followed up quickly by a visit to the late Charlie O'Brien, a noted piper and tutor who lived in Strathnaver, to obtain his thoughts on the matter. "A great idea" was Charlie's response and he proceeded to lobby some piping enthusiasts in the area by calling the inaugural meeting in Dunrobin Castle, Golspie, on Tuesday 8th June, 1999.
The first Committee appointed at that meeting were -
Dunrobin Castle Piping Championships were now a reality and the first competitions were held on Sat. 23rd Sept. 2000, but, before any competition could be run, a substantial amount of money had to be raised. This task fell on the shoulders of Lord Strathnaver who, after some disappointments, came up with the idea of approaching his fellow landowners. The response was admirable and we are greatly indebted to these kind people for their continued generosity.
Our objective is to create a competition to encourage younger pipers and others who have not yet won any of the main prizes at the major competitions in Inverness and Oban.
Our competitions are now run annually on the second Saturday in September EXCEPT every fourth year (when the Castle is required for the Clan Sutherland Gathering) when the date is moved to the fourth Saturday.
The 2010 competition will take place on Saturday 11th September 2010 within Dunrobin Castle. Last date for accepting entries will be 14th August 2010, but entries to the chanter competitions will be accepted until 10 am on the day of the competition.
Good luck to all.
